The Painter’s Prerogative

(1 minute 10 seconds)

My artist friend Jane transforms blank canvases into splendor. It was my joy to tour one of her galleries recently with her as my personal guide, where I discovered the quiet power of seeing art through its creator’s eyes.

I walked beside Jane in awe as we approached a long hallway lined with her stunning work. Stopping before the first portrait, I watched my friend lean forward to inspect her displayed beauty.
Though I wouldn’t say I have an artistic eye, even I could see that this gorgeous oil painting beheld a streak, a smudge that wasn’t part of its original creation. This painting had apparently gotten dinged somewhere en route, and my artist friend saw the deformity of her painting immediately.

My friend leaned forward a second time, scrutinizing. Then she did something that only the creator of this portrait alone dared to do – she licked her thumb and rubbed it onto the canvas! The creator alone had the authority to do something so brazen! She rubbed in vain and then stepped back as I took a turn leaning forward to look at the tainted canvas.
I was horrified to realize someone had ruined her work. I whispered solemnly, “I am so, so sorry.”
Hands-on hips, she said with her endearing and upbeat British quip, “It’s ok. I’ll patch it up. I’ll set it right when it comes home.”

Just as Jane knew every brushstroke of her creation, our Creator knows every detail of who we are—our blemishes, our beauty, and the restoration we need that only He can provide.
We belong, canvas and paint, body and soul, to our faithful Creator; the One who knit us together and formed us. He alone has the power to “patch us up” within and without and to “set things right” again. All Glory to Him who is making all things new! (Revelation 21:5)
