This 100 day challenge of documenting the “Goodness of the Lord” has been good for my soul. Actively looking for goodness is quickening my gratitude response. And I’m glad about that.
It is a bit shallow though “just” being grateful for the cat (though I do love my cat!), the chocolate cake, and the stunning field of wild daisies. Deeper yet is being grateful to the Giver of all these good things. And deepest still is adoration of the Giver of all good things.
As I have been intentionally looking for goodness each day, I HAVE increasingly seen His goodness in the ways He provides and supplies, for sure! Yes, amen, and thank you!
Today on day 37 of this journey however, I am beginning to see that I can easily get too fixated with looking for goodness and missing the Giver of goodness in my life.
C.S. Lewis said something brilliant. Well, he said lots of brilliant things but this morning when someone said, “The source of goodness is the Shepherd”, I was reminded of one of Lewis’ profound word pictures about sunbeams of light and following them back to their source, the sun.
Lewis said, “Gratitude exclaims… ‘How good of God to give me this.’ Adoration says, ‘What must be the quality of that Being whose far-off and momentary coruscations are like this!’One’s mind runs back up the sunbeam to the sun.”
For sure it is good and right to be thankful for good things. And yes, so importantly, being grateful toward the Giver of good things. But ultimately and supremely important is my heart posture of adoration of Jesus my Shepherd. And adoring Him as the Source of goodness, not just the Giver of good stuff.
